Catlinite is also called pipestone and is usually brownish-red in color, because it is fine-grained and easily worked, it is prized by Native Americans, primarily those of the Plains nations for use in making sacred pipes. The term Catlinite came into use after the American painter George Catlin visited the quarries in Minnesota in 1835. Minnesota catlinite is buttery smooth and can be cut with a regular hacksaw or even a knife. It is a favorite of many Zuni fetish carvers for its softness and ease of shaping.

Dan is known for his abstract modernistic style of fetish carving. This extremely large and long mountain lion weighs in at 5.3 ounces! It is the largest we have seen having been carved in 2003 and originally purchased from Spiritworks. The eyes are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the fetish is unsigned which is more often than not typical of the artist and family. Do not miss this opportunity for a centerpiece carving from Dan Poncho!
