Of all the reptiles in the American deserts the Texas horned toad is a fovorite of mine
since childhood. As a youngster in the late fifties they were very common on the west side of Houston. We
would hunt them down and marvel at the prehistoric appearance of these miniature dinosaurs. We would release them
of course, an early type of catch and release program. A predator would have to be foolish to try and make a meal
of this cute reptile. Today sadly the territory of the creatures has shrunk enormously due to urban sprawl, fire
ants and pesticides that have had a devastating effect on their numbers in the wild.
The Zuni fetish collecting community and the Pueblo of Zuni lost Staley much too soon in
his young and prolific career as realistic fetish carver. His smiling face and joking manner will be most missed.
He is known mostly for his lizard, frog, horned toad and snake carvings. However he began creating large and elaborate
carvings of animals protecting the village, carvings that he fashioned after those of his friend and mentor Herbert
Him, who himself is a true master of realism, who tutored many young Zuni fetish carvers and who originated realistic
Puebloan ruin scenes in his Zuni sculptures. Staley rose quickly to become extremely popular with Zuni fetish collectors.
He had an eye for design, a honed skill for carving, and his patience in etching brought a fresh, contemporary style to the
tradition of Zuni fetish carvings. He quickly became recognized as something special in the art of creating Zuni fetish
sculptures.
Staley used a fairly uniform brown Picasso marble for this sculpture. This is a dimpled variety
reptile carving and detail is minimalistic for Staley standards, but the pueblo is detailed enoigh containing 2 windows
and a door plus he carved steps in the walls to gain entrance to the structure. The raised and rounded eyes are inlaid of
Sleeping Beeauty turquoise and the sculpture is signed S. NATEWA ZUNI on the bottom of the fetish. This is a small but
powerful example of the talent that was Staley Natewa.
