Dave and I were huge fans of Staley's work and he was the very first carver that we were introduced to Zuni. We find his work even more fascinating today, with the sad realization that he was taken far too soon. He was very young and extremely talented.

This rattlesnake is carved from a piece of brown Picasso marble. It has a few gray inclusions and veins but it is predominately beige and brown - the perfect stone for making a rattlesnake!

Staley had two distinct styles of rendering his reptiles. The first, and more labor intensive, was the checkering style of etching the scaly surfaces of lizards or snakes. The second, and looser style, was what we call polka dot etching. At some point, Staley's work became so highly in demand, that he could not keep up with the more intensive checkering style and began completing more carvings in the polka dot style.

This rattlesnake is fantastic due, in large part, to its complex posture. Knowing the tools that the carvers work with it, is amazing that this snake was completed without breakage. Staley inlaid the snake's eyes with turquoise. The viper's head is etched and dimpled as is the snake's body with a segmented line down the spine all the way to the etched rattles at the end of the snake's tail.

Snakes, in Zuni lore, are revered for their ability to pass between the upper world and the lower world. This snake carving by Staley Natewa (d.) is indicative of his passion and his talent. He is most definitely missed.
