We have often been surprised by the mammals, fish and birds we have seen the Zuni carvers render. But we have been told that Zuni runners ventured as far as the California coast to trade, so they brought back such experiences of coastal life to their Zuni Mountain home. I don't know that they experienced Narwhal's, however -- that experience was likely introduced via the Discovery Channel which is a big hit in Zuni! Seriously, though, we do know that the Zuni's had a word for "whale" which clearly indicates the transfer of information between tribes.
Derrick Kaamasee has carved this beautiful antler Narwhal with great skill and imagination. Clearly, he's been impresed by their spiraled horn and beluga-like body. The Narwal is carved in an upright position, with the tail mingled along with sea coral or vegetation carved as part of the base. The carving is perfectly balanced and rests solidly on a flat surface. The eyes are inlaid of turquoise and there is some yellowing along the back, likely the residue of the external surface of the antler itself.
Derrick is related to the Laate family of carvers. He learned his skill from uncles, Maxx & Pernell (d.)
