We count our blessings to have discovered Zuni fetishes when we did. There was a huge revival going on in Zuni due largely to an article published in the Wall Street Journal in the 1980's. Then, with the creation of the internet, the availability and exposure of Zuni and its talented artists just exploded. We have seen some amazing work in our twenty years of collecting and the quality of stones during this time was unequalled.

Wilfred Cheama has carved this stocky, powerful bobcat from an exquisite piece of turquoise. It has some cuprite and minimal tenorite and the color is a vivid, true turquoise color. The posture of the bobcat is compact, as though he is prepared to launch himself toward some prey. His face and head is beautifully detailed with lapis inlaid eyes, a well carved ruff and alert ears. The body of the bobcat is fully etched to appear furry. The tail is in "mid switch" (indicating deep concentration on the prey) and this is a MALE bobcat. We have always found it amusing that the carvers really enjoy anatomical realism ... ahem.

Wilfred is, of course, a member of the talented Cheama family. He is well known for his realistic, finely etched pieces and was taught to carve in this style by half-brother, Dan Quam. I am particularly fond of his bobcats. They are always tight, little powerhouses that just exude wildness and strength. Another in our estate series. Don't miss this opportunity to add this treasure to your collection. Signed.
