Michael Coble was a protege of Herbert Him. We never had the opportunity to meet him but we have admired his work since we first discovered it. One of the distinctive features of Michael's work is that he does not polish his carvings with wax. His carvings all have a natural, matte finish. He carves a variety of animals and we have seen many Coble carvings that are table fetishes.

This handsome turtle is carved from serpentine with some banding. In Coble fashion, it is highly detailed. The feet, neck and head of the turtle are etched roughly to appear as skin, and while the shell is highly defined, it is finished smoothly.

Michael has inlaid the eyes of either malachite or serpentine. They are dark green in color. He has etched the bottom of the shell and signed his name in script, "Michael Coble".
