I think the first Hubert Pincion carvings Dave and I saw were the beautiful alabaster swans he made and then hand painted the features on. Not long after we became acquainted with his horses, usually made from Montana Talc (a soapstone), as this one is. Hubert is probably best known for his horses now and he carves them in a variety of sizes and postures. Today, mares and foals seem to be his forte. The truly remarkable thing about Hubert is that he is the only carver (that we know of) who routinely uses only hand tools to make his pieces. That is why his material of choice is soft, like alabaster or soapstone.
This gorgeous grazing mare is one of the larger pieces we've seen. As usual, it's made of Montana talc and, as usual, it's graceful and elegant. Hubert clearly loves horses as evidenced by his intimate knowledge of their movements and profiles. Signed "Hubert Pincion 2001" on the bottom. Truly a lovely example of work from this talented artist.
