Staley was the very first carver we met in Zuni. It was a banner day for Darlene and I .. Staley had Herbert Him in tow .. TWO MAJOR ROCKSTARS! Our friendship with both grew over the years and we spent time in both their homes. Staley was young and strapping - a great looking guy and so very talented. We're confident in saying that there were no limits to what he might have achieved. It's hard to believe he's been gone fifteen years. The rattlesnake fetishes by Staley are iconic and revered by collectors. This rare example includes the swallowing of a horned lizard! Ever wonder how, in life, they might manage that? Pretty sure the horned lizard puffed up and the snake was forced to spit him out. But Staley has captured the vignette perfectly. This dimpled style of carving is precise and detailed and the style that evolved after he perfected the more labor intensive checkering style. The eyes of the rattler are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the eyes of the horned lizard are inlaid of red coral. The sculpture is signed S Natewa Zuni on the bottom of the carving in his typical manner. Great addition to your desert collection. Don't let it pass you by.
