Though buffalo didn't range as far south as Zuni Pueblo, hunters did go out to hunt them to the north
and east of present-day Zuni. They also traded items for buffalo hide, horn and meat. Moccasins made of buffalo hide, robes and
blankets - these were all highly prized by the Zuni as evidenced when the Spanish first encountered them in the mid 1500's.
This spectacular buffalo carving was made by master carver Herbert Him. He used a piece of dark black
marble to render this handsome bison. Herbert has etched the front quarters, hind quarters and head of the bison roughtly to appear
furry but also highly polished. He has inlaid eyes of the bison of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and, in his typical fashion, the
bison horns are carved of the same stone rather than applied or inlaid. The fetish is signed HERB HIM ZUNI in his usual manner.
This carving will be a great addition to your herd of buffalo!
