Snakes are carved a lot by the artists of Zuni. And they are as varied by carver as they are in real life. Some are sleek and long, some are robust and coiled to strike. Some have rattles .. and some do not. There are only two venomous snakes in New Mexico - the rattlesnake (several varieties) and the coral snake. Albert Eustace, related to the Othole family of carvers, has carved this large snake from Picasso marble. It is finely etched, then polished and a black jet bird (a raven?) is in its mouth. Both the snake and the raven have turquoise inlaid eyes.

Snakes are revered in Zuni lore because of their ability to "move between worlds", residing both above ground and underground in caves or dens. This snake is signed "Albert Eustace, Zuni, NM" on the bottom of thte snake. From our estate, collection, we cannot be sure when it was carved.
