Lorandina is the daughter of Aaron (d.) and Thelma Sheche and the granddaughter of Theodore Kucate (d.), perhaps the first well-known Zuni fetish carver. Their style is reminiscent of the old style fetishes written about by Frank Hamilton Cushing, a Smithsonian Institute scientist sent by Washington in the late 1800s to study the Zuni people. He lived among them and even became a Priest of the Bow in that warrior society, and he wrote many publications about his experiences with the People.

The turtle is perched on the wing and the back of the eagle in flight. Lorandina utilized a seam turquoise in sandstone matrix stone for this fetish sculpture. She inlaid the eyes of the eagle of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the necklace of red coral and Sleeping Beauty turquoise. The eyes of the turtle are inlaid of red coral. The sculpture is initialed ATS LS in typical fashion. This is an unusual Lorandina sculpture and you need to add it to your Zuni fetish collection!
