Less than ten years ago a miner prospecting not far from Bakersfield, CA came across an ore
vein the likes of which he had never seen before. So he extracted a few samples and had them assayed and could
hardly believe what the assay report said -- the stones contained forest green malachite, cobalt blue lapis,
green and blue green chrysocolla (chemically a close relative of turquoise), a little actual turquoise, cuprite,
tenorite and purple sugilite which explains the high price of some of the stones and this weighs in at 2 ounces.
Not every stone contained all of these minerals, but all of them were present in the ore vein. Such a magnificent
mixture of semi- precious gem material in one ore vein deserves a classy name so the miner named this new stone
Courtland - the alternative spelling is Cortland Plume.
Courtland Plume stone is found only in California. It is a natural gemstone, a rare California
turquoise distinguished by a preponderance of black matrix and a variety of colors. The Courtland Plume mine is
actually a gold and silver mine which produces a small amount of this spectacular turquoise.
Marnella has created a modern day rendition of an old style mountain lion that is a prey lion
like those in the Frank Hamilton Cushing book ZUNI FETISHES. The eyes are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise
and the offering bundle consists of a gold-lipped mother-of-pearl arrowhead with a turquoise bead and branch red
coral tied with sinew. Done in the time honored Kucate-Sheche tradition, this gorgeous stone makes for a prize of an
old style lion for your Zuni fetish collection.
