Ancestors to ammonites, Orthoceras are extinct cephalopods who are the ancestral cousin of the modern squid or octopus that lived in the ocean that once covered the northern Sahara desert about 400-million-years-ago during the Devonian Period. Today this prehistoric sea floor is ironically, found in the dramatic Atlas Mountain Range in southern Morocco, North Africa at the northern fringe of the Sahara desert.

The word Orthoceras means Straight Horn and refers to its shape. These very primitive members of the phylum cephalopod are similar to the ammonite but with a straight shell and can range in size from a few inches to over six feet. Their shells fell to the floor of the ocean when they died, where the shells were covered in sediment, then over time compressed into marble from limestone. The fossilized structure is preserved in black marble and white calcite then polished to highlight the sea creature's distinctive chambered walls.

Most Lynn bears we have sold have been rounded and were medicine type bears, but this one is elongated and slender perhaps due to the piece of marble he purchased for carving. The eyes and heartline/breathline dots are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the sunfaces are inlaid of turquoise, red coral, jet and Mother-of-pearl. The fetish is signed Lynn Quam on the bottom of the carving. This is a high quality fetish with fine fit and finish.
