In the Red Sea pearlers called this kind of pearl oyster sadaf and ancient
harvests provided large black pearls for Indian and Persian monarchs. The black-lipped pearl
oyster is now cultured for pearls in French Polynesia, Australia and other areas in the tropical
Pacific Ocean. Pinctada is a genus of saltwater clams, marine bivalve molluscs in the family
Pteriidae, the pearl oysters. These oysters have a strong inner shell layer composed of nacre,
also known as mother of pearl. Pearl oysters are not closely related to either of the edible
Cheryl has created this corn maiden from a thin piece of this shell. One side
is mostly black with a small amount of irridescent white shell. The other is an etched corn maiden
complete with robe with red coral, penshell and turquoise inlaid stars. She also has etched corn
rows, a turquoise necklace, a red coral mouth and jet inlaid eyes. The fetish is signed Cheryl Beyuka
on the bottom.
