On one of our adventures west, Dave and I took my two children to some of the puebloan ruins in Northern New Mexico. We visited Aztec and Bandelier .. and Chaco! Chaco Canyon is just an amazing place. If you ever have the opportunity to visit, you MUST! There is so much to see, but I remember that in the museum/guest center, there was a jet frog carved in a similar style, inlaid with shell that was excavated from one of the ruins. Chaco is an ancestral Zuni home, so this isn't surprising at all, but I love the continuity of creation and the repetition of iconic symbols that were mportant to the ancient people .. and still important to contemporary Shiwi artists today. This "low rider" frog is made of jet by Emery Boone.It has raised eyes inlaid of turquoise. It's quite flat, measuring only 1/2" tall, but is a nice size and very interesting with its inlaid rain cloud of turquoise and Mother of pearl shell. Rain is such an important resource in this arid environment. Moisture from rain and snow are as necessary for survival today as it was a thousand years ago. Frogs are generally associated with water and rain, so it's just a natural expression of that prayer to inlay the frog's back with a rain cloud. We purchased this frog some years back and he's been in our inventory since. He is signed "Emery Boone Zuni" on the bottom. Whether you just like frogs .. or have a deep appreciation for Zuni history and culture, this carving will be a great addition to your collection.
