I am a pretty creative person, but I don't understand the kind of vision that looks at a chunk of antler and says, 'Oh that looks like a bull rider!? And, knowing that all of this was carved completely freehand with just a vision in the artist's head, makes it even more amazing. Have you, as a collector ever wondered how there could be so much talent packed into one tiny community?

This carving is fairly large, it's a little over 3 1/2 inches tall and about 3 inches long. There is no inlay or decoration on this piece and frankly, you don't miss it! The bull is big and powerful and doing a handstand trying to buck the rider off his back. The rider is holding his hat in one hand and grasping the bull only with his knees in true cowboy fashion. The cowboy's clothes, jeans, boots and gauntlet gloves are all detailed, even his hair is etched to appear as flying on his left shoulder.

The proportion of the bull and rider is outstanding and the imagery of movement very obvious. It's an unusual and quite stunning piece of work by artist Esteban Najera. Signed on the bottom, E. Najera, 2007. From our personal collection.
