When we started Zuni Spirits, we purposely only offered Zuni carvings. We consider them the best carvers with the most skill, so the decision was an easy one. It is said that other tribes (including the Navajo) sought out Zuni carvings in trade. And for many years this seemed to be the case. Then, Navajo carvings started increasing in popularity. And perhaps it was a case of Navajos marrying into the Zuni tribe and being taught this skill.

In any case, none of that has anything to do with THIS carving! I bought this carving for my mother on an early trip to Zuni as a souvenir. I bought it from a trading post north of the Zuni reservation, on the way to Gallup. At the time, she was collecting small Mallard ducks made from all kinds of materials. I thought this one, with its varied materials was quite creative. She enjoyed having it in her collection (which included a new Zuni fetish from every trip!), and when she passed away in 2015, it came back into my collection.

The duck was made by David Yazzie from jet, primarily, but he has used cowrie shells for the wings and gold-lipped Mother of pearl, turquoise and pipestone on the duck as well. It's very well done and looks very much like a Mallard. I don't know anything about the carver. "Yazzie" in New Mexico is like "Smith" everywhere else. There are lots of them and many of them are artists. So, sorry, I can't tell you any more than that. We do know that he also carved eagles, using Mother of Pearl and various materials. He seemed really skilled at putting different stones together to represent particular birds. The carving is signed.
