This beautiful horned lizard carving come from a private collection we've been entrusted with. It's carved from Picasso marble and is made by the talented Staley Natewa, whom was lost to a respiratory illness in 2003 at age 33.

Staley rocketed to the forefront of contemporary Zuni fetish carvers due to his imagination coupled with amazing skill and talent. He carved a variety of fetishes and sculptures but lizards and horned lizards probably dominated his repetoire.

There are several styles associated with Staley, this one is a "checkboard style" and was likely carved in the late 1990's. Staley carved this detailed texture early on, before developing his "polka dot" texture when he could render faster and keep up with demand (which was high!)

I questioned Dave's ID of the stone as being Picasso marble -- that yellow streak threw me off. But I sent pictures to Gabe Sice and he confirmed it was, indeed, Picasso marble. (Gabe usually agrees with Dave .. you know how GUYS are. :)

In any case, it's a fabulous carving and is sure to be the center point of any collection. If you do not own a Staley piece, you really should consider the investment. He was a monumental talent and a star that fell much too soon ..
