This Aaron (d.) and Thelma Sheche carving is made from serpentine and it is an old style mole carving. These old-style carvings are often misunderstood and misidentified, but there were carvers in Zuni in the late 1980's and early 1990's who were attempting to duplicate the carvings pictured in the Cushing excerpt from the ethnological report of 1880/81. And we believe this is one of those.

The carving has turquoise inlaid eyes, and that is the only feature that distinguishes the head from the tail. It is signed on the bottom "ATS" in sharpie pen which was the standard method for the Sheche's in the 1990s.
