Another beautiful carving from our personal collection, this Picasso marble lizard is by Staley Natewa (d). Staley became extremely popular among collectors of the day for his outstanding renditions of lizards. Initally, he made them very anatomically detailed. Then he evolved to a "checkering" method to render the texture of the lizard's skin. Finally, when he realized the demand for his work was far too great for such time consuming detail, he started making these "polka dot" lizards. Still amazing in proportion and with implied realism, this surface was less laborious to execute.

With infinite patience, skill and a side of luck .. Staley carved the lizard completely free standing from the base it rests on. Meaning.. you can see "daylight" under the lizard's belly -- Staley having painstakingly removed all the stone under the resting lizard. The motion of this piece is quite spectacular, as is the detail of the whipped over the back tail. As you know, lizards will "lose" their tail to distract a predator and then completely regenerate a new one. The segmented tail on this fellow is remarkably displayed. The eyes are inlaid of turquoise and the fetish is signed on the bottom.
