This lovely onyx frog pendant was made by Andrew and Laura Quam. Laura passed away in 2014, so this was made sometime prior to that. All of Andrew's siblings were carvers, as was his dad, Anderson and his uncle, Miguel Haloo. It is said that the uncle was the person who taught Andrew to carve, and likely his siblings as well. Laura, also, would have learned from her inlaws or her uncle by marriage.
Frogs and turtles are the signature pieces by this creative couple. Their turtles often had layers of stone or beautifully inlaid backs and shells. This white frog is adorned with little turquoise "dots" meant to signify rain drops. It has eyes inlaid of turquoise as well. It is suspended from a handmade, sterling silver chain that measures 24" long, giving a 12" drop to the necklace.
A whimsical example of Zuni craftsmanship that comes with much tribal symbolism, this frog will be both a conversation piece if worn, or just beautiful to look at in your collection. Signed, A & L Quam on the bottom.
