My memories of Pernell Laate are all of memories of Pernell and Maxx because I never saw one without the other! Pernell with his long hair in a ponytail,x a bandanna tied around his head like a headband, and both he and Maxx in heavy-metal band T-shirts. Always!
Knowing how close they were it was particularly sad when we learned Pernell had passed away in 2008. Both he and Maxx learned to carve from their father, Willard. Both were known for carving antler. Pernell started carving in the 80's and quickly became adept at carving both human figures and various animals, sometimes with snakes. He also ventured from antler into carving fossil ivory.
This particular fossil ivory carving is exquisite. Please note the dimensions and recognize that is a penny the carving is resting on. It stands a mere 1 1/8 inches tall, and features a highly detailed eagle feasting on a snake. And actually, the snake is a rattlesnake, with the segmented rattles distinctively carved. The posture of the bird is evidence that Pernell spent a lot of time watching wildlife. The eagle's tail feathers are down, as is the head, stabilizing the balance of the eagle while he feeds.
The eyes of the eagle and the snake are inked rather than inlaid. The feather detail on the eagle is precise and realistic and the snake is coiled around the stump the eagle rests on and is equally detailed.
The carving is signed on the bottom "P Laate" and his typical fashion.
