order for this Halate Fetish Necklace.
This Leonard Halate fetish necklace is probably 30 to 35 years old. It came to us via a trusted Zuni vendor and we have had it in our collection for about five years. It is the only double strand necklace that weve had, having sold two other single strand necklaces.
"Old Man" Halate was known for his dinosaur and fantasy animal fetishes which he attached found items to - old combs, pieces of plastic and the like. He was widely collected by celebrities and collectors worldwide before he passed away in 2001.
This necklace is 24 inches long with a 12 inch drop and the largest bird is 1 1/8 inches long. There are a total of 30 birds on the two strands, 15 on each strand. The necklace is beaded with pen shell heishe and each of the birds has inked eyes. The necklace hardware (cones & hook & eye closure) is sterling silver. There are no identifying marks on this necklace (Leonard never signed his work anyway), but it comes from an extremely reputable dealer and there is no question about its authenticity.
A word of caution: we would not recommend this necklace for wearing, as it is likely strung on cotton and, due to the age of the necklace, it would be best used only as a display piece.
There are obviously a finite number of authentic Leonard Halate pieces in todays world, this would be an excellent opportunity to add a historic piece to your collection.
