We met Vince Chavez through his cousin, Ephran Chavez. Ephran is the son of Herbert Him. And there are a lot of Chavez family who carve, but not all of them are related. Ephran was very friendly and outgoing. His cousin, Vince, was the exact opposite. He was painfully shy and so Ephran did most of the talking. If I remember correctly, Ephran taught Vince to carve, so he accompanied him when meeting with buyers.

We loved the tiny buffalo we were seeing in Zuni and when Ephran heard we were in town (news travels fast in Zuni!), he and Vince came to the Inn at Halona where we were staying. I remember standing on the patio determined to get Vince to actually talk to me. Okay, maybe, he listened, but what I said was how taken we, and many collectors were, with the detail and profile of his carvings. If they were that powerful at a little over an inch long, how would, say a 5" or 6" buffalo be? The next day, guess what he brought me?

This gorgeous example of shy Vince's talent is really breathtaking. Apart from the beautiful posture and power, the contrast between the etched, matte surfaces and the highly polished smooth hind quarters is just stunning. The eyes are inlaid of turquoise and the buffalo is initialed "VC" on the front hooves. (But I had to get a magnifying glass to be sure!)
