We were introduced to Sarah Leekya at Pueblo trading Post in Zuni Pueblo. She worked there part time as did a jeweler, Leonard Martza.

Once we became acquainted and friends, she invited us to visit her at her home in old town, which she shared with her older sister and some nieces. It was actually the home she grew up in and originally belong to her father, Leekya Deyuse.

Her sister, Bessie (Elizabeth) was a beader, and she showed us a variety of Christmas ornaments she was making, among them, a dozen tiny angels. I have no idea how she formed these angels but they’re absolutely precious.

The angel has beaded wings, and a traditional Zuni hairdo. She wears a turquoise necklace and earrings with red coral and she has turquoise bracelets on her wrists. Her robe is decorated with red and green flowers along the hem of her mantra and she wears moccasins. She looks exactly like the traditional dancers of Zuni.

We were fortunate, over the years to buy quite a few of her pieces. They’re really exceptional and are an interesting find from a prominent artisan family in Zuni. Bessie was likely near 80 years old when we met her. Here is a link to information about her jewelry career, shared with her husband, Frank. I believe she passed away in 2012.
