This carving is probably one of Darlene's top five all-time favorite pieces. It’s carved from fossilized ivory by Pernell Laate, whom we lost (much too young) in 2008.

We met Pernell and his brother Maxx at the same time, at the Pueblo of Zuni arts and crafts. We never saw one without the other after that. One time, Darlene took her mother to Zuni, and she and Pernell and Maxx had a great time laughing. The Laate brothers had a great sense of humor! Darlene‘s mom‘s name was Lela . And the three of them got all involved in deciding what her Zuni name should be. I think the winning entry was “Lela Lasiloo”. We were particularly sad when we heard about the passing of Pernell, knowing how close he and his brother were, and remember them always laughing together.

So, this carving evokes special memories but it is also a stunning example of Pernell’s amazing talent. Carved from a fossilized walrus tooth, Pernell has crafted a very detailed and beautifully styled macaw.

Every feather on the wings is individually etched and detailed as are the tail feathers. The feathers on the head are splayed and individually carved. The macaw has a beautiful rendered beak and inked eyes. Everything about the posture and attitude of this macaw is realistic and superbly done. Pernell signed the bottom PLaate in his usual fashion. You won’t be disappointed!
