We met Staley Natewa on one of our first trips to Zuni in 1997, I believe. Darlene was a huge fan of his work and after purchasing several pieces, we were fortunate enough to meet him. Years went by and we bought a lot of his work. But sadly, he passed away much too young. He rose quickly in status among collectors around the world. It would�ve been interesting to see how his work would Have evolved and matured over the years.

He was a student of Herbert him, but he developed his own style quickly and rendered his pieces with a lot of detail and movement.

This Picasso marble carving is fairly small in size. Please refer to the dimensions listed below. It is a horned toad or lizard guarding a pueblo. The pueblo walls, vigas, doors and windows are highly detailed as is the body of the horned lizard. Staley cut completely through the stone, carving out the belly of the lizard so that all 4 feet are completely separate from the top of the Pueblo. Hopefully, you can see it in the photos as I�m not explaining it very well. If you have questions let me know and I will take additional photographs.

This is another outstanding piece from the consignment collection out of California. The carving is signed on the bottom S Natewa, Zuni.
