This adorable pair of whales is carved by Alex Tsethlikai. He has used black marble for the mother whale and turquoise for the baby on her back. The eyes of the larger whale are double inlaid of turquoise and jet, the baby has jet eyes.

We used to only buy fetish animals that were native to the area around Zuni. But we learned early on, that because of trade with tribes to the west, the Zuni even have a word for "whale" in their language. Modern day carvers are big fans of the Discovery channel and now every animal known to man (and even a few aliens!) are fair game for the creative minds of Zuni Pueblo!

This very sweet carving will remind you of the bounty and life that lives in our very fragile ocean environments. And of the bond between mother and child, regardless of the species. Unsigned.
