Chris Yuselew was definitely on track to develop an even greater following than he had already achieved in a very short period of time. He was born in 1973 and I can't remember when he tragically passed but he was young. This turtle was carved in 2000, so he would have been 27 at that time. He was very talented and carved a variety of animals, sometimes employing sgraffito to his pieces.

This turtle is carved from gray serpentine and has nicely finished features, turquoise inlaid eyes and a shell etched with traditional puebloan motifs. We bought it while on a buying trip in Zuni along with a zillion other pieces. So we didn't realize, at the time, that the two front flippers had small chips out of them. It may have even happened on the trip home. In any case, we just decided to keep the turtle .. and so he's been in our collection since that time.

I believe the chips could be easily smoothed away with an emery board, but we are offering it "as is" for a much discounted price. You may choose, like we did, to leave it alone or you may decide to perform surgery. In any case, it's a wonderful example of the work done by a talented young carver lost too soon.
