Rhoda Quam Maidens Video
At first glance I thought this was a Faye Quandelacy maiden .. but it is signed and clearly carved by Rhoda Quam. Rhoda was born in 1955, but I haven't been able to learn when she passed away. I know her mother, Annie, passed in 2002 and there are reports Rhoda did as well, but I question that. It just doesn't seem that long ago. Rhoda learned her inlay skills from her mother, but she was taught how to carve corn maidens by her friend and neighbor, Faye Quandelacy. The siblings of Rhoda are Lynn Quam, Nancy Quam Westika, Pernell Gasper (d.) and Phillip Pinto (d.). They are all children of Annie Gasper Quam (d.) Now, both Rhoda and Faye are gone .. and only their beautiful maidens remain.
Carved from a beautiful piece of (probably stablized) turquoise, this carving represents five Zuni maidens. Two little girls have tablitas (wooden ceremonial headdresses) and three maids are olla maids carring water pots on their heads. They are all exquisitely detailed and inlaid with red coral, lapis and jet. Dragonflies and robes decorated with traditional designs complete the piece. Eyes are inked rather than inlaid.
A truly wonderful rendition of beloved Zuni maidens. Signed "R Quam" on the bottom.
