After my dad passed away and my mother came to live with us, we were not able to travel and so Zuni came to us via Dr. Harold Finklestein. He would travel to Texas a few times a year and always made a habit to call on us to see if we needed inventory. He was so trusted and knowledgeable and we used his service as a valued resource. We still continued to buy directly from a few carvers who would send us things, but Dr. Finklestein was the only wholesaler we ever bought from. I am certain this piece came through him, and I suspect Dave bought it when he visited Harold in Dallas while I was recovering from cancer treatment. It's a jet bear carved by Barlowe Quandelacy. It's striking how very similar it is in shape and stature to the bears made by Andres. But the primary difference is that the bear is a bit larger and smoothly polished. It features a turquoise heartline and eyes. There are initials on the bear's feet: "B" and "Q" but I was unable to photograph successfully. These are the words of Dr. Finklestein regarding similar carving on his website: "Barlow (d.) was one of the elder children of Zuni fetish matriarch Ellen Quandelacy who passed away in the early eighties. His style obviously rubbed off on younger brothers Avery and Andres as this is a standard pose for bears with fish from the siblings today. Purchased in the 80s this example is a rarity in todays market. Do not let your collection be without this fine jet bear!"
