We never saw Travis Lasiloo when he wasn't happy, laughing and cracking a joke except maybe this one time: Dave and I were in Zuni for the the return of the pilgrims who travel every four years to Zuni Heaven - a lake - which is fifty miles away in Arizona. It was a very quiet and reverent village which gathered at the river to watch the returning pilgrims. Dave and I were both surprised at the tears welling in our eyes. We were touched at the continuity and devotion to tradition and religious rites practiced, even today, as they have been for centuries. And we watched with Travis, who found us and greeted us with bear hugs as we stood together in the crowd. We were always conscious that we were vistors, privileged to be invited to share this sacred experience so we were always quiet, respectful and stood to the back of the crowd. But Dave had forgotten to remove his cap in respect and was gently reminded by Travis. We appreciated his instruction and guidance and his friendship. We treasure this and all our memories of Zuni.

This beautiful raven was carved in tremendous detail and with great care by Travis. Ravens are very important, environmentally and with regard to symbolism within the Pueblo. There are lots of stories about the raven and his feathers are often used in ceremonial dance costumes.

The realism of this carving, with its crossed wing feathers and posture are exactly what we came to expect of Travis. He may have been a jovial goofball when interacting with us, but he was really serious about his work. It's why we had so many pieces of his in our collection over the years.

The only inlay on this piece are the eyes inlaid of turquoise. The true appeal is the tremendous detail and realism Travis achieved with his talent and his knowledge and respect of the raven. Signed.
