This gleaming little corn maiden is tiny but quite stunning. She is made by
Carlos Tsattie from Mother of pearl. She stands less than 2" tall, but has tons of detail and charm.
She is wearing a tablita (a decorative headress worn in ceremonial dances) and has a body of
corn with eyes inlaid of turquoise. She is "planted" in a pot, the dimension of which gives her stability,
so she easily stands on her own. (That is something you should always think about when acquiring maidens. Many
of the shell ones are so thin, they have trouble remaining upright.)
Carved in great detail on both sides, this sweet little girl will add to your
collection. The Corn Maidens are very important figures in Zuni lore as they are believed to have
appeared to the Shiwi (Zuni) people when they were starving and freely gave of their bodies.
Signed on the bottom.
