When Rickson was a youngster, he learned the art of Zuni fetish carving like all of the craftsmen and women have over the decades of the artform. An older family member, a friend or fellow clansman shows the next generation how to pick rock from the trading post or a found stone, how to grind the different stones into a general shape and then finish them in detail with files, sandpaper, other stones or the new rotary power tools available today, then how to polish them into the artform we see as finished carvings. It is this family connection that is at the core of the preservation of the Zuni fetish creations and will sustain the artform far into the future.
This alabaster "Coca Cola bear" is an early rendition of the bear that Rickson has become well-known for and a fetish that has been extremely popular with collectors for many years. This one has its offering bundle inlaid instead of tied on as has become the more common method. It is a more stoic and stiff than his recent works, which are full of motion, animated and some are contortionistic. This piece was carved in 1983 and is a highly collectable piece for Rick Kalestewa collectors, and would be the centerpiece of the collection of this favored carver.
The arrowhead is inlaid precisely and is created from Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the eyes, nostrils, mouth and claws are of jet.
The carving is unsigned but most fetishes were unsigned prior to Y2K. Do not let your collection be without this rare beauty!
