Here is a gorgeous four-sided maiden sculpture created from Ruby in Zoisite, a
fuschite with red corundum (ruby) inclusions scattered throughout the green and white stone, also known as
anyolite, it is a natural combination of ruby and zoisite crystals in a single specimen. Vast ruby deposits were
discovered in 1949 at Longido in northeast Tanzania at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The discovery was made by
Tom Blevins, an English prospector.
Whether called zoisite, fuschite or anyolite, they are actually the same mineral as tanzanite, and
provide an earthy green color while ruby lends pink and red highlights to the stone. Ruby-zoisite is usually shaped
as cabochons or carved into decorative objects. It was first discovered in 1954 in Tanzania. The name anyolite derives
from the word for "green" in the native language of the Masai tribe. The green zoisite is relatively soft, between
5.5 - 6.5 while the ruby inclusions are usually quite hard, 9 on the Mohs scale. This can make the stone difficult
to cut because of the differences in hardness and usually diamond tools will be used.
The maiden eyes and mouths are inlaid of jet and the robes and corn kernels
are interspersed with turquoise, red coral and lapis inlay. The fetish is unsigned which is more often than not
common to the carver and the family. Sandra really found an outstanding specimen of this beautiful stone to
create this carving. This will make a great addition to any Zuni fetish collection.
