Russell Shack

S O L D Saiyatasha, the Longhorn Kachina (or Rain Priest of the North) from the Shalako ceremony, is depicted here in black marble by Zuni fetish carver Russell Shack. The longhorn dons a mask with exaggerated projecting ears and etched rectangular eyes, and in the dances is usually accompanied by Hututu, his "Deputy". Sgraffito, Italian for scratched, in the visual arts is a technique used in painting, pottery, and glass, which consists of putting down a preliminary surface, covering it with another, and then scratching the added layer in such a way that the pattern or shape that emerges is of the lower color. In carving in stone, first you polish the marble, then you etch or scratch the design into it, creating white on black surface art. The mouth and necklace are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the robe is etched with Puebloan geometric designs. The fetish is signed Russel Shack Zuni with the copyrite symbol.
