This bird was made from a very large nugget of stabilized Kingman #8 Mine turquoise by Zuni fetish carvers Pete (d.) and Dinah Gasper. It is mostly colored with very pretty blueish hues and scattered inclusions of tenorite (black) and cuprite (reddish browns). Chunks of American turquoise of this size are rare to find and the remaining veins and pockets are quickly being depleted thus becoming increasingly more expensive. With the jewelry industry utilizing most of the remaining stocks of the American varieties, the fetish carvings created today are mostly being produced from the more plentiful Chinese varieties of the semiprecious material. This avian specimen weighs in at a whopping 6.4 ounces!

The eyes and nostrils of this giant bird are inlaid of highly contrasting red coral. The fetish is uncharacteristically unsigned. Please do not miss out on this great example of a large American turquoise sculptural piece of Zuni fetish art from Pete (d.)and Dinah Gasper. You will regret it!
