Organic in origin, Jet was formed by the decomposition of ancient trees called Protophinacea, similar to modern day Cypress under high pressure over millions of years underground. Jet ranges in color from a very dark brown to black, takes a good polish and has been found in jewelry dating back to 17,000 BC in Asturias, Spain. Jet is found in two forms, hard and soft. Hard jet is the result of the carbon compression and salt water, while soft jet is the result of the carbon compression and fresh water.

It is in shale formations, on and near the coast in the vicinity of Whitby, in Yorkshire, England, that the finest jet has always been found and worked. It occurs in lumps of variable size, often retaining the shape of the branches and twigs of the trees from which it evolved. There are also other sources of jet. During the days of the Roman occupation of Britain and up to the present time, it has had a varying degree of popularity, finding its widest use as mourning jewelry in the middle of the nineteenth century.

Dave has inlaid the eyes of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the fetishes are not signed which is typical for the artist. The carvings were originally purchased from Four Corners in 2006 and the consignee has requested that they be sold as a pair.
