Catlinite is also called pipestone and is a type of argillite or metamorphosed
mudstone, usually brownish-red in color, which occurs in a matrix of Sioux Quartzite. It is used in
the making of sacred peace pipes. Pipestone quarries are located and preserved in Pipestone
National Monument outside of Pipestone, Minnesota and at the Pipestone River in Ontario, Canada.
The term Catlinite came into use after the American painter George Catlin visited the quarries in
Minnesota in 1835. Only enrolled Native Americans are allowed to quarry for the stone at the
Pipestone National Monument, and thus it is protected from over-mining. It is a favorite of many
Zuni fetish carvers for its softness, coloration and availability.
The eyes are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the fetish is signed
E Boone Zuni NM on the bottom of the carving in typical fashion. This cute amphibian was originally
purchased from Four Corners in 2003.
