Organic in origin jet was formed by the decomposition of ancient trees
called Protophinacea, similar to modern day Cypress, under high pressure over millions of
years underground. Jet ranges in color from a very dark brown to black, takes a good polish
and has been found in jewelry dating back to 17,000 BC in Asturias, Spain. Jet is found in
two forms, hard and soft. Hard jet is the result of the carbon compression and salt water,
while soft jet is the result of the carbon compression and fresh water.
Spanish jet found in Aragon, Galicia and also in Austria is harder and
more brittle than the English product. Jet from Wurtemberg, Germany, is considered
inferior. Material from El Paso County, Colorado, takes a fine polish, and Wayne County,
Utah jet is generally an inferior quality with many cracks. Deposits also occur at Pictou,
Nova Scotia, Canada but the hardness of the material produced is inferior. The province of
Languedoc, France is another well known source. Jet ornaments have been found in Paleolithic
cave deposits in Switzerland and France and, more importantly and most relevant to this
discussion, among the archeological treasures of the Pueblo Indians of North America.
Kenny has inlaid the eyes of the bison with sterling silver and the
fetish is signed Chavez in the typical manner of the artist. It was originally purchased in
2001 and will be great for pocket, purse or your Zuni fetish collection!
