Michael Coble's work was distinctive and impressive from the start. We were never fortunate enough to meet him, but we really liked his style of carving and the matte finish on his carvings. The first piece I saw was a frog, then we saw snakes, birds, bobcats, alligators. Nothing seemed to be out of his reach, carving wise. We don't know much about him personally, other than he and Staley were friends of Herbert Him and they shared both friendship and knowledge.

This gorgeous snake carving is made from Utah wonderstone, a jasper, that is rusty brown and ochre. Perfect for the rendition of an east Texas copperhead .. of which this could very well be! Copperheads don't live in New Mexico -- but remember, the Discover channel is BIG in Zuni! Regardless of the kind of snake it is, this is a nicely carved one. The motion, etching and posture are all spot on. The eyes are etched, not inlaid and the carving is signed "Michael Coble, Zuni, 2000" on the bottom.
