Once, while on a buying trip to Zuni Pueblo, Dave and I had the fortunate experience of meeting brothers Maxx and Pernell Laate.
They both had beautiful long, black shiny hair… Maxx wore his in a ponytail while Pernell wore his in double braids. They both had a MASSIVE sense of humor… (a trait very common in Zuni!) and we enjoyed laughing with them immensely during our visit.
Each of the brothers became known for their detailed Antler carvings. And for their generous nature and sharing their knowledge with the younger generation of cousins. Sadly, Pernell passed away in June 2008.
This Moose carving made of mule deer Antler is a spectacular example of the kind of detailed and realistic carvings Pernell was able to achieve through a variety of materials, though predominately Antler and fossil ivory. The Antlers of the Moose are rendered from the button where the Antler attaches to the skull. So, in effect, Pernell visualized this Moose carving up side down. The Moose's face and body are detailed from the beard to the etched fur down to the cloven hooves. Pernell used ink in the etched eyes rather than inlay.
The carving is signed P. Latte Zuni on the bottom. Don't hesitate to add this spectacular piece of Zuni craftsmanship to your collection.
