Milton Honawa's work made a big splash in Zuni. Though he is Hopi, he (was, at least, at that time), married to a Zuni lady, so his work was considered Zuni. He was known for his badgers and bears which were massive and ferocious, carved down to their terrifying teeth. So this carp carving, made from pipestone, is a bit of a departure for him. The carving is heavily etched, scale for scale, with deeply engraved vegetation that the carp rests on. The eyes and head are also highly detailed, with the eyes being etched, not inlaid.
Though his work was well received, it came and went, and perhaps he is no longer in Zuni. We just don't know. This carving is likely from the late nineties or early 2000's. Signed "MH" on the bottom.
