When I first met Maxx and Pernell (d.) Laate
I was on a buying trip and we were all gathered in the (then) Pueblo of
Zuni
Arts and Crafts building run by Dennis Ortega. The Laate carvers were
very
humorous and laughed at all comments by traders and artists alike. Another time, Darlene took her mom on her first ever trip to Zuni. The Laate brothers were particularly kind and enjoyed teasing Darlene's mom about being Zuni. This
burnished lizard appears to be fossil walrus ivory but the collector who
consigned it says it is antler. While it is true that Laate brothers were primarily carving antler at this particular time, this fetish is too heavy, dense and the wrong color to be antler.
The eyes of the lizard are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise
and the fetish is signed "P. Laate, Zuni". Probably carved in the mid 1990s. Pernell died in 2008, but this is a great example of his style and talent.
